A Rolling Stone decidiu refazer uma de suas listas mais famosas do mundo: a de 500 melhores músicas de todos os tempos. Esta é a primeira atualização do ranking depois de 17 anos da criação. A grande diferença notada é a maior diversidade de gêneros.

Para chegar ao resultado, foram convidados mais de 250 artistas, músicos e produtores para uma votação. Também votaram figurões da indústria da música e jornalistas. Cada um enviou um top 50 e depois todo o resultado foi avaliado.

Ao todo 4 mil músicas foram indicadas e mais da metade – precisamente 254 canções – não estavam presentes na lista inicial.

Dentro do Top 10, o antigo número 1, Bob Dylan com “Like a Rolling Stone”, caiu para quarto. Aretha Franklin e a também clássica “Respect” saiu de quinto para a liderança. The Rolling Stones com “I (Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, John Lennon com “Imagine” e Chuck Berry com “Jhonny B. Goode” não aparecem entre as 10 mais na opinião de jornalistas e convidados.
