A NME é uma das mais respeitadas revistas especializadas no mercado musical em publicação no Reino Unido e como parte da primeira edição do ano, a revista publicou uma lista com os “40 Melhores Singles da História”.
A lista foi compilada pelos escritores da NME e uma fatia dos atuais artistas da cena Indie Pop e colocou “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, dos Beatles, na primeira posição.
O destaque pop ficou para Britney Spears, que aparece na quinta colocação da lista com a música “Baby One More Time”.
